My boyfriend is currently pursuing his Ph.D. in wildlife studies. While he has the higher education, my earning potential is equal, if not greater. When we first started dating, he really questioned my decision to not get my Masters degree. For him, a Masters was essential to success in his field. It took him a while to understand that, for me, it’s a different ballgame professionally. I have considered going back to school many times (mainly because of the state of the economy and the possibility of not being able to find a job if, for some reason, I lost mine), but I am also happy with my professional position and understand that getting my Masters or Ph.D. in my field would have the biggest benefit if I decided that I wanted to teach at the college level, which is not something that I want to do. The degree that I have serves me very well. I have greater potential for upward movement without a Masters or Ph.D. in my field than my boyfriend does without one in his field. It ultimately comes down to what you do and how your education serves your chosen career. Also, it’s not impossible to find someone who is on an equal playing field intellectually as you without the same degree. It’s close-minded to think that, just because you went to college, you have a higher I.Q. and are more socially repsonsible than your partner. There are SO many other factors in a person’s life that affect their intellect and social outlook. Hot debate. What do you think? Thumb up 10 Thumb down 2 Reply Vox says: September 20, 2011 at 12:42 pm I’m surprised that a man wrote the comments about requiring a degree; usually women are the ones who date resumes. The last time a man inquired about my education was probably in 1992, when I was actually attending a university.
