I haven't stepped back into the dating pool yet, not sure I ever will. But I know they aren't all losers, and sometimes it does actually work out.

Awww Dan. You are a one hopeless romantic (lol @ spilled coffee) . Sounds like you just need to be a little more open as to what avenue love comes to you. The internet does lend a certain freedom to those like yourself who don't have the time, energy or stomach for traditional dating situations. Which let's face it, can be VERY convoluted. So let yourself be free, say what you feel, even if it's "hey, I'm a writer, and I have no idea what to say on this thing...." Take the same approach that you do to write this blog. My husband and I met through Myspace. He's an artist. I'm a singer who wanted to do some modeling. Guess what? He needed a model. lol I know, sounds creepy, but THAT is one conversation starter. Anyway, I did feel awkward about meeting (and this was business, not dating) but I thought, if I don't put myself out there I'll never get what I want. Besides, I can handle myself. So a MONTH after he contacted me, I replied. He turned out to be interesting, funny and normal. The only thing creepy about it was how instantly we connected. Business became pleasure and today we are 5 years married, 2 kids deep and following our dreams together, because it turns out, Artists and Singers have quite a bit to talk about.

I actually met my wife on the exact web site you refer to. I had only been a member on the site for less than a month, while she had for a couple of months. I sent her an email on May 5, 2003, went to meet her(she lived just inside the 100 mile radius I put up) on May 23, 2003, and never went home. We were married on May 8, 2004. I know it sounds really corny, but we knew we were in love before we actually laid eyes on each other. We were very lucky to have something like this work out, because let's face it, the odds were stacked against it. She has told me that she had met two or three guy on the site, and was unimpressed, and had given up. My email showed up in her inbox on a day when she was in a good mood, so she opened it, and lucky for me she liked what she saw. So, it does work, you just have be lucky enough to find the right person. I always thought that the only people on dating sites were those that were socially awkward and unable to meet someone in the "traditional" methods, yet here I sit with the woman of my dreams as my wife due to a dating site. So, don't give up if you don't meet someone right away, there is probably the perfect hiking partner out there for you!
